Cheras ‘B’ Rover Scout Crew (Ixora Rovers)

Chronicles of Cochrane Road Rover Crew a.k.a “Ixora Rovers” (EST. 1975). Traditonally most of our members are from nearby schools and has never been a scout before. The post of Crew Leader are usually held by former Senior Scouts who have return to Cochrane to study in Form 6. The crew is now amalgamated into 06th Cheras Scout Group based in SJK (C) Naam Kheung.

The crew was founded by Founded by Mr. Liew Kwai Keat. Mr. Liu incorporated the first of the Rover Crew into Cochrane Scout Group (36th Kuala Lumpur) which consisted of Form Sixes. Later in the 1980’s, the crew was known as 11th Kuala Lumpur Bandar Rover Crew and in the 1990’s, they were known as the 11th Bukit Bintang Rover Troop.

In November 1996, the crew was  registered as Kelana ‘B’ Bukit Bintang by their Rover Leader then, En. Azhar bin Noor Rahman from Johor. He is also a temporary ADC for Bukit Bintang District and subsequently the scout leader of the crew.

In 1998, issues arise as the open crew concept did not work because non-form six students are not allowed to join. Futhermore, the crew is still under the Group administration and not completely independent. Followed suit, in June 2000 the crew was registered as an open crew by Yuen-Sang Ng, and known as Cheras ‘B’ Rover Crew.

The initial idea is to allowed Rovers who has completed Form Six in Cochrane to continue their rovering instead of resigning from scouting. This idea finally worked in 2002 when ex-Seniors that did not continued their studies in Cochrane, join the Crew, and also ex-Rovers are rejoining. The Crew still submit annual report to the school as we are considered part of the school.

In July 2001, the crew held their first Tenderfoot Investiture for the first time at night. Completion of Vigil was also attempted. The completion was held in Sg. Congkak in december the same year.

In July  2002, the crew and its members are now not considered part of the Cochrane Scout Group (19th Titiwangsa) by the school authourities, but Rovers that are part of the Group Committee are still retained as committee members although they officially are not registered under Titiwangsa District. This is because the Group still have use for their services.

The problem arise when the Group SM refuse to acknowledge the Crew as part of the Group because the Crew is not registered under the same district as the Group does. This means the Crew are not allowed to conduct any activties in the school. From this moment onwards, all activities ceased to held in the school and are now based in SRJK Naam Kheung with the 06th Cheras Scout Group.

To further strengthen the crew, the rover leader received his Woodbadge in 2003. As in that same year, only 2 members remain active. This is not the lowest in our history, in 1995-96 there was only 1. The Crew is part of the 6th Cheras “16th Anniversary Campfire” organizing committee, in charge of fire, sketch and sound system. “It still amaze me how we manage to do our part with just 2 Rovers.” – Rover Leader
