Ghana Scouts Forge Ahead ”Project Meridian”
ACCRA – Situation: Need for development. Operation: Building a hall, installation of computers. Code-name: ”Project Meridian”. It is within this parameters that between July and August 2008 a joint project involving Ghana and UK Scouts took place.
Jemima Nartey, Deputy Chief Commissioner of Ghana Scouts Association commented in retrospect ”Long live the cherished sign of friendship between us [Ghana and UK]”. This initiative involved forty-six explorers and leaders from Harpenden, Wheathampstead and Cambridge District (UK) and Scouts from Hohoe district (Ghana). It has brought smiles not only to Scouts but also to the entire community of Hohoe.
The Project Meridian is made up of two ventures :
1. The building of a Hall 50ft X 20ft for use as a Scout hut and general use by the Hohoe district scouts to hire out to the community to make sufficient money to pay for the electricity and water bills.
2. Provision and Installation of at least six (6) computers and accessories to eight (8) local schools, two (2) computers and accessories each to the Municipal Education Office, Local Police and the Traditional Chief’s Office; laboratory equipment to the Municipal Hospital. There was also a donation of fifteen (15) tents, forty-footer container for storage and kitchen utensils and appliances such as a refrigerator to the Scouts.
A joint effort, an extension of a brotherly hand and a good Scouting spirit has made a dream come true. Ghanaian Scouts are grateful to all forty-six (46) Explorer Scouts and leaders (Jo Busby, George Divine and Liz Jack).
